Did you know the youngest babies see high-contrast images and patterns best? This accordion-style board book features simple black-and-white shapes for newborns on one side and a rainbow of colors and scenes with George for toddlers on the reverse. What better way for curious babies to learn about color than with Curious George! The book includes a magnetic closure and is sturdy enough to stand on its own. Set it up on the floor to encourage a newborn to turn her head or an older baby to lift his head during tummy time. Also includes tips on different ways the book can be used for recognizing simple shapes and teaching color mixing.
Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
The featured character in this foldout sheet of heavy cardstock is a small brown monkey named Curious George, based on the character created by Margaret and H. Rey. This is not a typical book. There are seven 7 ½" by 7" sections that fold out completely into a 7 ½½" by 49" cardboard wall of words and pictures with color pictures on one side and black and white images on the other. When the pages are folded together into book form, a flap fits over the front edge to hold it all together. Instructions on the back suggest ways to "Laugh, listen and learn with your curious baby," including standing the accordion-like book up on edge so baby can see it stretched out; choosing to introduce a color a day; and examining the all the different shapes on the black and white side. A blurb on the back cover says that babies see close-up, high-contrast images best, which is why they will enjoy the black and white pictures. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
